Welcome Back to Wolcott Street School!

Open House & Success of Our First Weeks Back to School!

We are thrilled to have our students back with us for a new school year. The LeRoy Central School team has been feverishly working to prepare the buildings, grounds classrooms and halls to welcome your kiddos into an environment that is centered around a nurturing, positive spirit and endless learning opportunities.

The first welcome back was on Tuesday, September 6th for our annual WSS Open House from 4:30-6pm. We had the Crave'n Food Truck, KONA Ice, Boy & Girl Scout troops, our PTSO and of course, our students, families and staff! If you missed Open House, click here to see what it was all about!

On September 7th, we welcomed our students back into the buildings. The halls and rooms were filled with smiles and positive energy.

WSS Academic Updates in Math: New Math Program for PreK-2 Students

Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classrooms have launched a new math program called Bridges in Mathematics. Students spend their math time developing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills and experiences working through complex problems. Their math lessons include learning opportunities with Number Corner, work places and investigations. It is exciting to see how curious their primary minds become through authentic, hands on learning experiences.

K-2 Families: Join us on Wednesday, September 28th for our Bridges to Mathematics Parent University Night.

WSS Academic Updates in ELA: Reading Anywhere & Everywhere

"Find joy in the reading." ~Mrs. Hertzler, 3rd grade teacher

Tune in HERE to see how Mrs. Hertzler, a 3rd grade teacher, invites the WSS community into her classroom to share their love of reading. Whether students read by looking at pictures, reading words to themselves, listening to stories being read to them by a teacher, family member, or even the author themselves... all reading builds the muscles of our minds and hearts.

Character Ed & SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Corner

As your children live through the first several days in school, they are learning "how to school" in their new settings. There are new routines, new people and new opportunities to learn. So many feelings can move through our minds and bodies during these first few weeks of school. We may feel excitement, nerves, hesitation, eagerness, sadness, joy... the list goes on. Knowing how to name our emotions can help tame, or control, emotions in new settings.

Here are a few links to learn more about the "Name it to Tame it" approach to validating and working through emotions with your child. This supports your child as they work to develop their own Self-Awareness, which is a core competency of Social Emotional Learning.

From the Desk of Principal Carol Messura

We have officially made it through a full week of school! It has been a relatively
smooth opening for all. A few things to note:

Arrival/Dismissal
  • Please see the attached map for drop off/pick up locations for WALKERS, PARENT DROP OFFS, and BUS STUDENTS. Arrival time is 8:45 a.m. We can not have students congregating outside. Please do not send your child to school earlier than 8:45 a.m.
  • Dismissal time is 3:05 p.m. Students will be dropped off by their teacher at each pick up location.
    • If you are dropping off or picking up your students at Stanley Place –please be mindful of the active driveways. Homeowners need to be able to come and go.
  • To access our Main Office, please park in the designated spots in the Stanley Place lot. Follow the sidewalk to the main entrance doors. Do not use our bus parking area at any throughout the school day. We need the area free and clear for emergency purposes!
Lunch
  • Just a reminder to check your child’s lunch accounts – with snacks being available for purchase. You may need to relish it in a shorter amount of time!
Safety
  • We have practiced 3 fire drills already! The kids are doing a great job at following all the procedures involved
  • Don’t forget to complete the electronic forms that the teachers sent out to you. If you need paper copies, please let them know!
Lastly, if you haven’t joined our Twitter nation… please do so! We are now including videos from our YouTube channel!

Thank you for sharing your precious children with us. It’s great having our school full again!
