January 2023 Edition

 Welcome to 2023!

This January, many classrooms set academic and personal goals for the new calendar year. It has been exciting to feel the rejuvenated energy flow across the building!

Community Events

WSS united to honor strength, perseverance and community as the greater area rallied behind Damar Hamlin in his incredible road to recovery with the Buffalo Bills.

We just want to give a shout out to our Knights on Patrol who continue to show responsibility, trustworthiness and care for our school community. Thank you for your commitment to keeping our school safe!

Support our PTSO with customized LeRoy Spirit Wear! Orders must be in by January 30th. Scan the QR code or go to https://bit.ly/leroyptsospiritwear And don't forget to order a 2022-23 yearbook! These are due by February 17th. Connect with your classroom teacher if you need an order form.

WSS Academic Updates

Classrooms continue to work with Mr. Weaver on Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM). This month's focus is with 1st grade and the study of energy and sun dials.

ELA Academic Update

Now that students have returned from winter break and are settling back into routines, we are busy doing midyear assessments.  These assessments provide teachers and students with opportunities to reflect on previous learning goals, celebrate successes, and set new goals as we move through the school year. Check in with your child on what they are most proud of related to their growth in reading and writing. You may be pleasantly surprised with what they share!

Math Academic Update

Our youngest mathematicians continue to work together in their "work places" learning through hands on games and activities. In 3rd and 4th grade, multiplication and division is underway and upon interviewing students about their favorite parts of math, we are learning about the genuine excitement and pride around grouping and breaking apart numbers. Keep it up!

Fifth grade students are learning all about the order of operations and why this process is so important. Students will discover that if these special rules are not followed they will end up with different answers.  Students will also find out that the order of operations is very important when they are writing a multi-step equation to represent their work.  Our fifth graders will be making posters to help them solidify their understanding of this important concept. Students also enjoy authentic learning through a token economy system, as seen below.

Special Area Updates

PE: January kicked off our annual Elementary Intramurals. Currently, almost 100 students in grades 5th and 6th are having fun enjoying some after school physical activity. Intramurals will be offered to 3rd and 4th graders starting in February.
Music: 6th Grade Jazz Band is off to a great start this year!
The 5th and 6th grade Mini Marching Knights color guard kicked off their winter season with a rehearsal on Sunday, January 8th with 15 students! Their next rehearsal is this Sunday, January 29th @ 1pm in the Trigon gym for any 5th or 6th grade students interested in learning how to spin a flag.
The WSS Band had a fantastic holiday concert this past December with 80 students!  They are hard at work on all new music for their spring performances.  We hope to see you then!
Art: K-3 Art Students started off the new year with a unit on kindness. Students listened to the story "A Little Spot of Kindness" and are working on several projects involving the theme of kindness. 4th grade students will be creating robots from reused materials and will incorporate STEAM to make their robots move! 5th graders have been working hard on a Superhero themed project to thank some real life heroes and 6th graders have created some well crafted Calligrams (pictures made from words). It's been a great start to 2023 in the art room!

Character Education/SEL Updates

The January Character Education assemblies took place on Thursday, January 19th. We split into two assemblies: PK-3 and 4-6. In each assembly, we celebrated 1+ student from each classroom who was nominated by a staff member for being a role model for the character pillar of Caring. Each student was recognized with a certificate and prize in front of their peers - and cheers filled the auditorium and gymnasium. We also had fun introducing January's Pillar of Character with Mr. Holly as our guest participant for Pickle in the Middle. The students offered ideas to revise a game that they felt was "unfair" and had fun participating, too! The links to each assembly are below.
