Character Spirit Week

2022-23 Year in Review:

Character Education & SEL at Wolcott Street School

MAY: Students were recognized on May 12th for demonstrating Responsibility across all areas. Some of the wonderful recognition statements were as follows:

  • She always takes responsibility for her actions, even if she makes a mistake
  • He is great at putting things back when he is done with centers or workplaces. His peers follow his good example.
  • She approaches teachers if something is missed from an absence or lesson and always makes a plan to complete the work - she is always thinking ahead!

APRIL: Our April school-wide assembly was a celebration of students who are role models for consistently demonstrating the character pillar of respect. Below are the students from each of our classrooms who were recognized for their commitment to being role models of Respect.
We also kicked off the month of Responsibility. We compared responsibility to a chain. We all have responsibility as a team, which represents a link in a chain. If we don't take part in our part of the responsibility chain, the chain will break.

March 10, 2023: Students were recognized for demonstrating TRUSTWORTHINESS. These students choose to "do the right thing even when no one is looking," "be honest even if when it may be hard," and they "be the person the class and adults can count on to know what to do." We also kicked off March's Pillar of Character, RESPECT by modeling some entertaining scenarios of how to show respect throughout our building and community. Enjoy the video recordings of our assemblies below!

February 10, 2023: We recognized 38 students PreK-6 who consistently demonstrated the characteristics of fairness through sharing, understanding and adapting rules within games if necessary, and ultimately understanding that fair is not always equal but rather, fairness is when everyone gets what they need in order to succeed.

Wolcott Street School celebrated Character Education Kick-Off Week in October. From dressing up like those we trust across the school to bringing in our favorite item that we care about, we enjoyed learning about the six Pillars of Character that we will be focusing on this year. The Pillars of Character, or character traits, are Citizenship, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness and Caring.

Every 1-2 months we will choose one trait to focus on with our morning announcements, cafeteria activities, morning meetings, classroom activities, media center storybooks and more.  Our goal is that with the support of our families and our greater community, WSS students and staff will choose to practice empowered lives anchored in positive character across all settings.
